The Institut des Amériques is a network of about sixty French institutes of higher education and research.
A dynamic network of over 1000 researchers
The Institut des Amériques (IdA) is research consortium (GIS, groupement d’interet scientifique) which federates French research on the American continent, in the fields of the humanities and the social sciences. Its networked structure allows the IdA to associate professors, researchers, professionals of scientific information, non-academic partners from economic, political and media fields.
IdA valorizes various scientific approaches from a comparatist, transamerican and transdisciplinary standpoint, thus contributing to the emergence of new problematics and to the affirmation of French excellence in research and higher education.
Missions of scientific support and development
The institute defines four points that it aims to connect:
- Various geographical areas
- Several disciplinary fields
- Several generations (confirmed researchers and young scholars)
- Various audiences and environments (scholars, journalists, business leaders..).
Also in order to comply with these objectives, IdA relies on the organization of scientific events: its annual conference is the federative event. Besides, IdA supports doctoral research (A PhD thesis and grants for on-field research).
To support its missions, IdA has adopted a structure that comprises regional and international centers. In this way, IdA offers several spaces for exchange and cooperation, both between scientific communities and the political, economic associative world and the media, and between the North American and Latin American scientific communities.
Five working groups make possible to develop these missions.
The project for the creation of the Institut des Amériques was born at the end of the 1990s, around the Institut des hautes études de l’Amérique latine (IHEAL, Institut of Higher Studies of Latin America) and of the north-Americanist research centers of the university Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3. In march 2007, thanks to the support of the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, and of the Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs, IdA was founded by the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS, National Center of Scientific Research)), in the shape of a research consortium (GIS). It is under administrative management by the university Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3.
Its seven founding members are CNRS, the university Sorbonne Nouvelle-Paris 3, the university Rennes 2, the university Toulouse-Jean Jaurès, the Ecole des hautes études en sciences sociales, the research institut for development and Science Po Paris.
Until the end of 2010 IdA operated on the precincts of IHEAL, with the help of IHEAL staff, and the staff of CREDA (Centre de recherche et de documentation des Amériques - Research and documentation center of the Americas).
